Wound Care

What is Wound Care:

A non-healing wound can cause much pain for a patient, further medical complications, and have a major impact on the quality of one's life. Major advances in treatments have developed to successfully heal and close chronic and non-healing wounds. Physical therapy can be an adjunct treatment for non-healing wounds when standard wound care is unsuccessful.

Optimal Therapy offers therapists that are certified in wound care and will collaborate with a multi-disciplinary team that may include your MD, nurse, prosthetic/orthotic specialist, and/or surgeon. Physical therapists with a specialization in wound care will perform a comprehensive physical therapy evaluation and develop a treatment plan that will apply to the various factors in the management of wound healing, including nutrition, blood flow and circulation, swelling, functional mobility, and pressure relief. Here are some examples of what we treat at Optimal Therapy:

  • Venous and/or arterial insufficiency wounds
  • Diabetic wounds
  • Pressure ulcers
  • Various burns
  • Sub-acute and chronic lymphedema
  • Traumatic wounds
  • Surgical wounds
  • Chronic wounds

Physical therapy wound care may include the following procedures and treatments:

  • Electrical stimulation
  • Ultrasound
  • Negative pressure wound therapy
  • Multilayer compression wraps including Unna Boot
